Icon41 The Amityville Horror

The Amityville Horror is a bestseller of the 1970s which after taking the nation by storm has been adapted into films. The story is based upon a house at the 112 Ocean Avenue where in the year 1974, six out of the seven members of a family were found murdered. One of the sons’ of the family was accused of murdering his family. The story revolves around a couple by the name Kathleen and George Lutze who after shifting to this house experienced strange and unexplained happenings.

The story cites that on the first night at their new house, the Lutzes’ came across strange things. There were personality changes in the family members after moving in to the house. Certain odd things that happened in the house included mysterious odours, running of green slime down the walls without any reason, black stains on the toilets and strange sounds coming from various locations of the house. When the events turned physical and the family experienced still stranger things, the Catholic priest that had earlier blessed their home was asked to perform another blessing.

While the strange happenings continued with unexplained reasons, the family could not take it any longer and after spending nearly 28 days in the house decided to move out with whatever little belongings they could carry.

The book titled The Amityville Horror was a success with over three million copies being sold and the Lutzes’ family claimed the story to be true. However there are questions that counter the validity of such claims. Even Butch DeFoe, the son charged with the murder of his family claimed that the story was a hoax only to gain popularity and of course money. The names of the priest and the other members of the story were used to give credibility to the story. With many questions remaining unanswered it seems the mystery of the Amityville Horror was indeed a hoax, but we will never know the real facts!
