The Unsolved Case of Suzy Lamplugh
The 25 year-old London estate agent was reported missing in July 1986. The only clue to her disappearance was an entry in her diary for an appointment with a "Mr Kipper" for a house viewing in Fulham. Her body has never been found and she was officially declared dead, presumed murdered, in 1994. Scotland Yard have said that the prime suspect is convicted rapist and killer John Cannan. It has been claimed that Cannan's nickname in prison was "Kipper". However, despite two reviews there is no hard evidence and Cannan has denied any involvement. Suzy's parents, Paul and Diana Lamplugh, both received an OBE for dedicating their lives to the trust established in their daughter's name to promote personal safety, particularly of women.
This is the timetable of events since her disappearance.
July 1986 The 25-year-old estate agent leaves her office in Fulham, west London, to show a man called Mr Kipper around a house.
A massive police hunt is launched when she fails to return.
December 1986 Diana Lamplugh, Suzy's mother, sets up the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, designed to promote personal safety and to "create a safer society".
October 1987 Police inquiry into the disappearance is scaled down, but the Suzy Lamplugh file remains open.
April 1989 Scotland Yard says it has no evidence to link convicted murderer and rapist John Cannan to Miss Lamplugh's disappearance.
Cannan, who is now aged 45, was jailed for life in 1989 for the murder of a 29-year-old woman.
He had been released from prison three days before Miss Lamplugh vanished and there was speculation that he was involved in her murder.
1994 Miss Lamplugh is officially declared dead.
1995 A book by crime writer Christopher Berry-Dee claims Michael Sams, who murdered prostitute Julie Dart, also killed Miss Lamplugh. The theory is discounted by police.
July 1996 Ten years after her disappearance, Miss Lamplugh's parents dedicate a stained glass window in their church in Richmond, Surrey, to her memory.
July 1998 Scotland Yard confirms it is investigating a new lead in the case from a woman who says she knew a man who knew Miss Lamplugh.
The Yard later says no new searches for her body will be conducted as a result of the tip off.
May 1999 The policeman in charge of the Suzy Lamplugh inquiry, Detective Chief Superintendent Brian Edwards, is appointed as the investigating officer in overall charge of the Jill Dando murder case.
July 1999 Some 13 years after she disappeared, the Suzy Lamplugh Trust is reported to be thriving.
November 1999 The Lamplughs receive information from a "secret source" who claims their daughter is buried in Norton Barracks, Worcestershire.
The location ties in with claims made by Cannan's girlfriend Gilly Paige back in 1989 that the killer confessed to burying Miss Lamplugh's body there.
December 1999 Detective Superintendent Sean Sawyer takes over the inquiry.
May 2000 The case is reopened after police reveal they have a new witness and fresh leads to follow.
