Chupacabras are s a legendary cryptid rumored to inhabit parts of the Americas. It is associated more recently with sightings of an allegedly unknown animal in Puerto Rico (where these sightings were first reported), Mexico, and the United States, especially in the latter's Latin American communities. It is said to feed on livestock, including goats.
The name comes from the Spanish word
chupar, which is "to suck" and
cabra, which means "goat". Hence the word means "goat sucker".
The first reported attacks occurred in March 1995 in Puerto Rico, which is said it attacked eight sheep, which were discovered dead, each with three puncture wounds in the chest area and completely drained of blood.
The most common description of chupacabras is a reptile-like being, appearing to have leathery or scaly greenish-gray skin and sharp spines or quills running down its back. It stands 3 to 4 feet (1 to 1.2 m) high. It is also said to look like a strange breed of wild dog.
There were once a
report on CNN about an unidentified dead animal. Locals said that it might be the chupacabra that they are waiting to see. But a taxidermist expressed his belief that this maybe a genetically mutated coyote.
